Language learning Alternatives
Various methods of learning a new language are readily available. Three common ones are classroom teaching, extracurricular practice and supplementary reading. Each system has its own advantages and challenges. Although each method can produce results, the method used depends largely on the individual’s personality and goals.
The simplest technique, with the least expense is supplementary reading. The student can choose their study time when it is convenient. The cost is minimal consisting only of purchasing books and materials. The shortcoming is that many students can’t effectively maintain study habits to achieve the desired results. Also with reading, the student may be able to read the words but proper pronunciation might be difficult to achieve.
The method of extracurricular practice is a technique many more students should use more. The trouble with this procedure is having a regimented schedule where the practice is ongoing. The other difficulty is finding a speaker who is fluent in that language to correct and teach proper pronunciation and intonation to help the student reach fluency.
The most common method is classroom teaching. As in many human endeavors, it perhaps isn’t perfect. Generally it has the advantages of a disciplined schedule and environment, taught by a teacher fluent with the language, common idioms, and culture / societal practices used in various countries using that language. Many times there are discrepancies between the actual dictionary meaning and the inferred connotation of words and phrases.
As detailed, home learning and practice is easy to schedule and inexpensive but sometimes lacks discipline by the student. Classroom instruction can be more expensive but has advantages of learning correct language skills, other cultures and societies using that language in a disciplined setting. Perhaps the best method would be to combine all three with students making an effort to practice their skills with other people with similar goals.
